Original vs Fake

Like most other women, even I am fond of jewelry. However, my inclination has forever been towards stylish jewelry. Explains why I am more faithful to sterling silver jewelry than gold and platinum. I love the color and beauty exuberated by silver and the elegance of sterling silver.

However, many deceitful jewelers are popularly selling “silver” jewelry, without christening it as “plated”, “pure silver” or “sterling silver”. Buyers often fall for this trick and end up buying fake jewelry, believing it to be sterling silver. Yes, sterling silver is cheaper than gold and platinum. However, it does demand a premium price compared to the cheap cosmetic jewelry and silver plated jewelry. So, why pay a price higher than what it is worth?

Here’s what you must check before paying a premium price for a fake.

Identifying Sterling Silver

Ideally, sterling silver is made up of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent of other metals, such as copper or nickel. The addition of another metal adds to its strength and thus, durability of sterling silver jewelry. Therefore, the best way to identify sterling silver is to look for the hallmark, which determines the purity. Often, companies mark sterling silver items with .925, “sterling”, “ster” or “stg”.
Yet another way to find out the authenticity of sterling silver is the small. Gold and sterling silver do not have a smell. However, plated jewelry often has the smell of another metal like copper or so. With experience, you can identify the smell of metals.

So, buy sterling silver stylish jewelry with care and avoid falling in a trap of buying costume jewelry for sterling silver jewelry.
